I documented the vital conservation efforts of Rewilding Apennines, part of the wider Rewilding Europe network. This project focuses on fostering coexistence between local communities and key wildlife, such as the endangered Marsican brown bear, in the Central Apennines, Italy. Through my lens, I captured the dedicated work of volunteers and staff restoring ecological corridors and supporting nature-based economies. This series highlights the region as the true wild heart of Italy.
On July 15th, together with Rewilding Apennines team and volunteers, we hiked through the BearSmart corridors on the border of the Abruzzo, Lazio & Molise National Park to check and service hidden cameras traps. These silent witnesses record the secret movements of bears, wolves, deer and many other species - essential data to map wildlife presence and design better coexistence strategies.
On July 17th, we hiked through the beautiful Valle della Dogana to track griffon vultures using GPS signals. These magnificent birds soar as symbols of wilderness - and by following their movements, we gain vital insights into their ecology and help safeguard this keystone species of the Central Apennines.
On July 18th, we hiked across BearSmart Corridors 3 & 4 on the border of the Abruzzo, Lazio & Molise National Park to check and service hidden camera traps. We replaced batteries and SD cards, tested each device, and ensured everything was fully operational. These systematic checks collect essential data on the presence of bears, wolves, and many other species - helping us better understand wildlife movements and safeguard coexistence in the Central Apennines.
